Alexandre TRAUNER
(1906-1993)



Born as Sándor Trauner on 3 September 1906 in Budapest. Following his graduation from high school, from 1924 he was a student of István Csók at the Painting Faculty of the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts. During his years at the Academy, he participated in exhibitions arranged at the Ernst Museum, the National Salon, the Műcsarnok/Kunsthalle Budapest, and in the rear quarters of the Mentor Bookstore. In 1927, together with his classmates in the Academy - György Kepes, Dezső Korniss, Béla Hegedűs, Lajos Vajda, Ernő Schubert - he established an avant-garde group, which in 1928 affiliated with Lajos Kassák's working group. In 1930, on the advice of István Csók, he went with György Kepes to Vienna, and then went on alone to Paris. Between 1930 and 1936, he worked as the assistant to Lazare Meerson, with the directors René Clair, Jacques Feyder, Marc Allégret and Julian Duvivier. From 1937, he worked as lead set designer on the films of scriptwriter Jacques Prévert and film director Marcel Carné. Following German occupation, in 1945 he returned to Paris and to film production. From 1958, he worked in Hollywood with Orson Welles, Billy Wilder, Fred Zinnemann and William Wyler. In 1960, he received an Oscar for the set design of Billy Wilder's The Apartment. In 1975, he returned to Europe, and designed sets for the films of John Huston, Joseph Losey, Peter Sellers, Bertrand Tavernier and Luc Besson. In the eighties, his artworks were shown at exhibitions across Europe, including in 1981 in Hungary, at the National Gallery. In 1991, he was awarded the Felix for lifetime achievement. He died in 1993 in Omonville-la-Petite.

Trauner Sándor 1906. szeptember 3-án született Budapesten. Reáliskolai érettségi után 1924-től a Magyar Képzőművészeti Főiskola festő szakán Csók István tanítványa volt. Főiskolás évei alatt részt vett az Ernst Múzeumban, a Nemzeti Szalonban, a Műcsarnokban, a Mentor könyvesbolt hátsó helyiségében rendezett kiállításokon. 1927-ben főiskolai társaival -  Kepes Györggyel, Korniss Dezsővel, Hegedűs Bélával, Vajda Lajossal, Schubert Ernővel - avantgárd csoportot alakított, 1928-ban csatlakozott Kassák Lajos Munka-köréhez. 1930-ban, Csók István tanácsára Kepes Györggyel Bécsbe, majd onnan egyedül Párizsba költözött. 1930  és 1936 között Lazare Meerson asszisztenseként René Clair, Jacques Feyder, Marc Allégret, Julian Duvivier rendezőkkel dolgozott. 1937-től vezető díszlettervezőként dolgozott a forgatókönyvíró Jacques Prévert és a filmrendező Marcel Carné filmjeiben. A német megszállás után, 1945-ben tért vissza Párizsba és a filmgyártáshoz. 1958-tól Hollywoodban dolgozott Orson Welles-szel, Billy Wilderrel, Fred Zinnemannal, William Wylerrel. 1960-ban a Legénylakás című film látványtervéért Oscar-díjat kapott.  1975-ben tért vissza Európába, John Huston, Joseph Lo-sey, Péter Sellers, Bertrand Tavernier, Luc Besson filmjeihez tervezett díszleteket. A nyolcvanas években kiállításokon mutatta be műveit Európa-szerte, 1981-ben Magyarországon, a Nemzeti Galériában is. 1991-ben életművéért Felix-díjat kapott. 1993-ban Omonville-la-Petite-ben halt meg.
