RÉVAI Dezső [Foto Turai]
[1903-96]

1903 born in Budapest. Teaches himself the basics of
photography.
1925 member of the Worker's Gymnastic Society.
1926 from this year member of the Communist Party, participates
in the activities of group Montage.
1930 and 1934 sentenced to prison for communist activities,
in both cases his photographs are used as evidence against him.
1935 some time after leaving prison emigrates to Paris,
where establishes contacts with Hungarian emigrés and begins to work as
photoreporter.
1936 soldier of the Hungarian unit in the International
Brigade during the Spanish Civil War. Works for the department of propaganda
of the Brigade, his photographs are signed Foto Turai.
1937 reportage Metro Madrid about the Madrid people protecting
themselves in the tunnels from German bombardment.
1939 after the fall of Spanish Republic together with
other members of the International Brigade interned in France. Organises
an underground photolaboratory in the camp.
1941 moved to work to Germany escapes back to France.
1944-45 take part in Resistance.
1945 organises photopropaganda in Hungary. Director of
Mafilm, Hungarian film studio.
1962 returns to photography after retirement. His travels
across the whole country result in numerous art postcards.
